My first night at the Castle was absolutely wonderful! I wandered
around for awhile, just drinking all of it in (and drinking a little
Zinfandel in as well). I am not sure I saw all of it, in fact there was
probably a lot I missed. All of you Magic! people were so terrific!
I was thrilled out of my socks that you came over. I love to see
people I talk to because they never EVER look like what you think they
will. I still want to hear the WHOLE story about the...er, ART form in
front of the Castle, you know, Piggy Pewter or whatever it is. There
has to be a story behind it and it must be a good one!

someone, but here's a shot at who was there, not in any order, MARK
LODGE, JEFF COWAN, LESLIE MANNING, KEVIN & KERRY CURTAIN, BURTON THE

Re: OLD JOKE IN NEW CLOTHES

I heard the following joke the other day- stop me if you've heard it
before...
As usual, the David Copperfield show was sold out, so I was surprised
to see an empty seat in front of me. I made a note of the oddity to a
nearby woman, and she explained that the seat belonged to her husband
who had recently passed away. "I'm very sorry", I responded. "Really,
I'm surprised another relative or friend didn't jump at the chance to
take his seat."
"Me too," she said. "They all went to the funeral instead."

Re: WHERE WOULD WE BE

I've had some new thoughts on originality and ethics.
.
Look back at the world of magic publishing for the public.
You can start with "Discovery of Witchcraft". All of these
books, with a few exceptions were explanation of creations of
other than the author. That includes Hoffman and the Legerdemain
section of Erdnase.
.
In many of these books the creator is not mentioned. I must admit
that Hoffman seems to give credit most of the time.
.
Mike Rodgers once commented that Don Allen was the most copied
magician. But one of Don's best routines is the Benson Bowl
Routine. Everyone uses his Invisible Deck which I think belongs
to Eddie Fields. The rising card deck was invented by Mike
Devano.
.
The inventive Albert Goshman uses the Devano Deck with almost the
same routine as Allen.
.
Fred Kaps made a reputation with Benson's Long Pour Salt Trick,
whoever's (?) Floating Cork, Joe Riding's Three Card Trick with
Four Cards. Yes, he did add his presentation and handling, but
the tricks were not new, and used by others.
.
You can pick any of the new books coming out and find that there
is a seed that is taken from another person. The exceptions I can
think of are Paul Curry, Max Maven, Jay Sankey and Paul Harris.
Most everyone else stands on the shoulders of giants.
.
I am not criticizing any of these people, it is what happens and
should be given some thought as to the ethics. Sure, something is
being added, such as handling, different prop, presentation.
.
All new magicains, who are not creative, use some of these ideas
and make them fit their own personality. This should be OK until
the performer has more experience, then more originality can be
seen.
.
I don't agree with TA that there are a lot of great tricks out
there. Someone once said there are no bad tricks. I disagree.
There are a LOT of bad tricks. Some tricks are merely puzzles
with no inherent entertainment value.
.
Since every good magicain I know, or have heard of, started out
reading some of the classics I mentioned at the beginning; where
would magic be if these classics did not exist? We would be like
the Egyptians or East Indians passing the art from father to son.
There would be no growth to the art.
.
I am not happy with the magicains who tell u in their books to be
original and then use other people's ideas. Again, somehow we
need to define what is original and what is building and what is
outright thievery.

Re: ORIGINALITY

T. A.,
The only musicians I know who do nothing but original material
are heavy metal and punk rockers. I know musicians (and have
worked) who are country, rock and roll, rhythm and blues, jazz
and of course classical musicians.
One of the biggest hits of last year was Guns and Roses doing an
old Paul MacCartney tune. (Live and let die.)
You mentioned Nanci Griffith. I would point out that the only
two songs she has had on the charts (Love at the five and dime,
and Outbound plane) were other people doing songs she wrote.
(With almost exactly the same arrangement. Weird stuff.)
One point that I must grant you was one that was brought home the
other day at the library. While I was looking through some of
the books there, I saw some effects that would be KILLER! Why
isn't anyone doing the cross-bow quarrel through the assistant?
Several of the effects I saw depicted could make for an
incredible act.
Enjoy!

Re: WHERE WOULD WE BE

Boy you sure hit a lot on the old nail head there, Cy... Yup....
Goshman's and Don Alan's routines with the Devano deck... (just
a brief comment on the name... it is Mitch Devano) I have the
decks made by Howard Bamman, which are the best ever made....
including a Jumbo Bicycle. It bothered me when Albert had rip off
copies MADE TO SELL. But... argh... whatcha going to do.
.
I agree with you about the good/bad tricks ratio. There are a lot
of crappy ones out there. But like Milt Larsen once said to me
on the subject of doing the same tricks... he likens the need for
the magician to be like the musician and WORK OUT HIS/HER OWN
ARRANGEMENT.
.
This is a subject that could go on forever. A new member of Magic!
has a variant on the Linking Rings that I consider a COMPLETE
DEPARTURE and a Breakthrough in presentation. So, the trick is
older than any books in the English Language, and here a young
fellow in the 20th Century improves the presentation.
.
Defining things are almost impossible. Variants, variations, subtle
differences, minute changes... maybe it is PROGRESS?
.
Saw a video of a guy that had a COMPLETELY NEW AND ORIGINAL AND
FUNNY way a spectator rubs his hand to make a ball vanish. This
to me was incredibly inventive and super funny. Can't wait to
meet him and BEG for permission to use the idea.
.
Same guy had a different way of doing another gag, that we saw
12 other comedy acts use (Bill Wells, Obie O'Brien, Joe Stevens
and I were judging the preliminaries to the Desert Seminar Comedy
Challenge tapes) and he was the FIRST (and subsequently ONLY) guy
that did the bit where it made sense, and at the same time he
came up with an original twist!

Re: ORIGINALITY

Of course Moretti and his son Pantar have been doing quite a bit with
crossbows; ever see their acts? As to Griffith -- she seems to be
categorized as country, and country performers DO perform a lot of old
favorites. When I think of star-type musicians, I am thinking for the
most part of rock and pop artists, who for better or worse comprise the
lion's share of the record and concert work. (I am always amused at how
the term "concert" has come to mean something done in a stadium or a
small county...) In any case, I don't know that magicians are in a
position to have the luxury of doing old standards. The whole idea of
magic is mystery -- and how mysterious can something be if (a) you have
seen it before and (b) know that several hundred other people can do
it?
If there is something only one person can do, it can be a miracle of
magic; if two people do it, it is still perhaps intriguing -- but I
think that as in genuine magic and physics, it is a matter of amplitude
and pressure (oh, I DO hope I know what I am talking about!) Anything
that hundreds of magicians can do cannot, by definition, be very
magical, NO MATTER WHAT IT IS. If said hundreds did Copperfields's
FLYING, and the audience knew this, it would still be pretty...but
that's about all.

Re: WHERE WOULD WE BE

I will agree with you that there are many, many bad effects -- BUT --
in the Castle Library, far from the largest, there are over FIVE
THOUSAND books, as well as files of several magazines running in some
cases for the better part of a century. If you considered that, in
accordance with Sturgeon's law, 90% of it is crap -- Okay, let's say
95% -- there is STILL more usable performance material than all the
people who perform in front of audiences anywhere could use in a
performing lifetime, with no two of them doing the same effects.
This is not even to mention the people who are constant creating new
material to perform themselves.
In re that 95% -- "using other people's ideas", when done with the
proper credit, can be valuable -- if in so doing the writer/creator
takes something impractical or unworkable and turns it into a true
performance piece. Sometimes it is a very simple addition or tweak
that makes the difference between crap and a miracle.

Re: ORIGINALITY

No, I've never seen Moreti or Pantar perform. It is astonishing
the amount of magic I've not seen.
I agree with you that the people who are performing big time
music are doing original material. I'm, however, talking about
the poor shmoe who is just starting out, and needs the hundred
bucks a night that a bar or nightclub offers for background
music. These people are somewhat analagous to the 99% of
magicians who are not big time.
I've never understood the appeal to the magician of doing someone
else's act. I can imagine doing someone else's effect, but
trying to mimic every move seems to me to be cheapening to the
magician.
Also, just because an effect has been done before, doesn't
necessarily mean that the mystery is gone. If the audience
doesn't know how something is done, then there is still a
mystery. I agree that an effect loses "punch" after it has been
seen, but on the other hand, how many magicians have a
"signature" trick that they do again and again. If an audience
is coming to see a particular magician, they may have seen him
before. Does this mean that we have to change our acts every
time?
Amplitude and pressure? Maybe we should call it the "wattage" of
magic?
Enjoy!

Punch can be set to varied depths. NO PUNCHES punch holes... that

At first I placed it directly on the CPU, but it can't be seen there,
so I've moved it to a position on a shelf above the CPU, directly in

Re: FARE TO SLC FROM LAX OR O

Actually, Jerry Burton (did I spell that right?) was the first to ask
at the Castle, but I did my homework today and found out that the
lowest, and I mean the dirt cheap, rock bottom fare to Salt Lake from
L.A. or Ontario to the I.B.M. convention that the Magicians Travel
Network (that's me) can offer is $173 and is on America West. IF you
live in Long Beach, by all means go to LAX and go from there or else it
will cost you $224. You will have to change planes on America West,
but the fare is good. HOWEVER...if you're going to be a fussbudget or
if you aboslutely HATE changing planes then the best at the moment is
a non-stop on Delta for $324 out of LAX or ONT. I have the America
West schedules (of course!) and they aren't too shabby and we can get
you there without too much pain. True, you have to change planes, but
you save $151. What's not to like??? You can reach me right here, on
the airwaves and I will be delighted to take care of your flight
arrangements. And please - BOOK EARLY!!! (Yes, I am shouting. Are you
listening???)

Pete,
Mike Nesmith's mom invented Liquid Paper. I have a friend who
swears his secretary hasn't made the change to word processors
well. He says he comes in and finds white-out all over the

Mike Nesmith was also the only Monkee to have a hit song (written

We've had a couple of people recently who have tried to leave personal

The Grismer punch will do everything you want. Look up Grismer's
other items. They are all good, as Ray is a marvelous idea man.
The Gaeton Pin item I like less. It is a very baffling effect,
but the pins look odd to most people. They look more like a magic
prop than the large pins of the Andrus type. You can get the same
effect with the pins and routine that Dan Garrett sells.

It is interesting that the illusion boys use the same material.
Not only the ZIgZag but the trunk trick. The first because it is
so portable and can be done surrounded, the second because of the
great effect. There is no excuse for them to use them on TV when
they've been done before.
.
It is interesting that Doug Henning brought the Torn Newspaper
back to popularity. It is Gene Anderson's, and the patter is not
Doug's either. In the rave reviews on his first Broadway show,
this was the item most mentioned.

If you don't like something, you can always come up with an
explanation. There is some music I don't like, and I can explain

people who enjoy magic. I've found that most people who don't
like magic have a problem with seeing something they can't

Re: 6TH ANNUAL MAGIC SPECTACU

Saturday the 15th was the date for the Sixth Annual Magic Spectacular
in beautiful Kona Hawaii. There were two shows held at the Aloha
Theatre ....a 2:30 matinee and a 7:00 evening show.
The shows lasted almost two hours and were headlined by Les and Terri
Au with the show that won them the prize in vegas last year....with a
new twist added. They brought down the house.....Kona had never seen
such a polished and perfesssional show before. Our other special guest
was a young man from Honolulu, Kris Kabasawa, who won the Hawaii State
"Search For Talent" award in 1991. Kris did a very fine 3 minute dove
act. An added treat from Honolulu was Crystal Au....Les and Terris's
nine year old daughter who did a soap box and coloring book routine.
Performers from the Big Island included....yours truly....Barry
Gitelson who was also the director and producer of the show. I did fun
stuff and opened the show with silk to egg....a card trick from
collectors workshop....burned and restored bill (ala the effect in
Ammars book using the lightbulb) and did a newspaper seance with head
spinning and a floating banana which was slowly eaten and restored!!!!
Arnie Rabin did a few rope effects (Darryls tape stuff) and an
original card effect with a fish tank and a shark....(card shark). Kim
Sweeney did rings, multiplyig bottles and a thumb tie. The comedy team
of "Bento and Jags" did a version of peanut butter and jelly using a
theme of the olympics. The mc of the show was Jon K. Aloha of honolulu
radio station KSSK who did balloons and entertained between performers
with some mentalism and comedy.
Our governor....John Waihee wrote a proclamation which declared the day
"MAGIC DAY IN HAWAII".....our mayor made the same declaration.
The show was a benefit for the american cancer society\west hawaii
chapter and is a major fund raiser for this worthwhile organization.
Our next show will be early next year and we are already looking for
someone to headline the show. We have never had a mainland performer
before and would likle to bring someone in to the islands if it is
possible.
Les and Terri are to be commended for coming to our show in spite of a
very busy schedule. They are two very wonderful people and we are
lucky to have them in MAGIC.
Anyway....it is late and I am tired and spacy but I wanted to get some
form of a report off. Our show was a complete success...
Please give us a call if you are on the big Island....our magic club
meets the first monday of the month but we will call a special meeting
anytime to meet with you mainlanders...
aloha.......Barry (The Great Barusky) Gitelson

I agree with you, Pete. I've tried to knoodle this thing out and I
think that if Joe is accepting significan others, etc. as "assistants"
then the policy is fair - my spouse does like to attend the shows, but
she doesn't go to the lectures, or, for that matter, even the "Ladies"
affairs (I think she went to one once), so the idea that she pays less
is reasonable. It is likely that if she had to pay the same fee as I
do, that she would simply not register.

How far into a card can you raise a bump ? Burger showed an effect
where you used a quarter to raise a bump in the middle of a card (or
use three drops of crazy glue in the center line of the card) so
you can 'fairly' cut to a desired position of a deck, right on the
table (so there is no possibility of holding a break).

Re: ODDEST PARAGRAPH?

Both the quarter and the glue drops work nicely. The glue drops allow
you to both cut the deck and to slide it and have it open up at the
dopped card. The quarter is good for quick, impromptu work, and I
think it is less reliable, although it does have the advantage of being
less noticable, particularly with a standard Bicycle deck (it can be
smashed down and will disappear fairly well).

The punch is a whole different thing, unrelated to the above. The
punch is for a mark that you can detect by feeling the individual card.

90% of ALL performers? If by that you mean anyone who walks on a stage

the case. I assume we are not talking about things like plays here,

Re: SHOOTING STAR

Those weren't explanations that I quoted; they were simply reactions --
and I don't agree that those who don't like magic have a psychological
problem, any more than those who don't like opera or heavy metal. It
is true that some people have an aversion to magic because they think
the performer is challenging them -- but that is usually because they
have been the victims of bad performers who present their magic as
puzzles, not because of any inherent quality of magic. The sister of
a friend once explained her aversion to magic thus: "I don't like
being lied to." That was the totality of her perception of magic,
although she didn't view drama that way. She simply thought that
magicians lied to you so they could make a fool out of you -- and many
do, or try to.

Punch work need be put where your thumb rests in normal dealing

Re: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

M 7 year old daughter, Holly, and I were practicing our close up last
night when suddenly she became very serious and asked me "Who's the
best magician in the whole world?" Immediately I thought of all the
greats - Dai Vernon, Sigfried and Roy, Copperfield, Doug Henning,
Houdini. I said there were a lot of them, but she persisted. "Who's
the BEST, Mom?" My answer was simple. "The best magician in the world
is the one that makes YOU the happiest. The one that makes you feel
the best." "Oh!" she said. "Well, in that case the best magician in
the world is Pete Biro, because he found a name for my monkey."

Re: MIKE O'DOWD

Yes, I got Mike's last letter recently. he had sent it to my old
address. Guess he forgot that I told him I was moving. I need to
holler at him. Thanks for reminding me. Since the conclave I've
been trying to get things sorted out and figure out how to make
up the loss on the show. Fortunately we got a contract on the
house in Maryland - but unfortunately it was 50 cents on the
dollar - due to settle around the first of May. My plans are to
be everywhere I'm both wanted and needed, but am also putting
out feelers to get a road gig for awhile since I need the bread.
Got a call yesterday from Coal Miner Music (Loretta Lynn) also
Lobo called again last night and wants me to come by the studio
to rap with him abut doing an Asian tour this summer. So far,
everybody that is checking me out needs me AFTER my money comes in
and I WON'T need the gig anymore. Also doing my first mailing for
Conj Woodwrks and some orders are coming in so I start that up
again next Monday after a long self imposed moratorium on magic
building - at least I'm getting to find out who my friends are!!
Have you booked your room for FFFF?? Is Richard going?? Things got
so tight recently that I almost called you in to sell off most of
my books, but decided to sell off a nice old D-28 guitar instead.
Yow!!!!!

Stacey...that "female accompanying magician" phrase isn't appearing
for the first time in the DMS ad. When it first appeared either one
or two years ago, I was quick to call Amy (who is an avowed feminist)
to see if she if she had been born again or undergone some other
strange conversion. There is no dark plot here...she and Joe simply
could not figure out any other way to say it. They are merely trying
to prevent guys from bringing along a buddy and claiming a discount
for an assistant when DMS intends the discount to apply to spouses
(the term we use on the IBM registration form - although spouses pay
the same as magicians at our conventions). Maybe "significant other"
would have been a state of the art term. At any rate, you should be
entitled to the less expensive rate for your hubby. Just call Joe or
Amy. Feel free to tell them I suggested you call them.

Re: DISKETTES

Uh, "Invalid media or Track 0 bad - disk unusable" generally means that
you are trying to format a Double Density (720-K) diskette at 1.44 Meg.
or a High Density (1.44 Meg) diskette at 720-K. It could indicate
other problems such as a bad controller or diskette drive, but that is
less likely. The fact that Drive D: did try to format is a positive
sign in that it tells us that DRIVER.SYS is working. Have you tried a
Double Density (720-K) diskette with the command FORMAT D: /F:720
That might be worthwhile.

the time the tickets are non refundable and non changeable. I am not

You got the IBM posters from the baltimore conv??? I bought a half
dozen while I was there, had four autographed for some special
friends (I kept one for myself) and gave the other two away; one to
Rudy (my backstage hand) and the other to Ken Klosterman. I was
wanting to get a few more as I think they are quite beautiful and
enjoy sharing them with special people who otherwise don't have one.
I will keep the autographed one for myself (probably). How is things
in the DC area?? How is the mayor doing?? The ex-mayor?? We are
adapting to the pioneer lifestyle and beginning to get into the
stream down here. The magic was better in the DC area with you,
Scotty, Howie, Bob Sheets, Dave Williamson, et al (2brute) but
music is better here. The magic thing is more a national and
international scene anyway. Last time I saw ya'll ws in Salt
Lake City anyway, but I will miss the Tex-Mex dinners and an
occasional trip to Old Towne. The lichen is really booming right

I hear you. I sold my acoustic guitar last week and get an offer
tonight to play acoustic with Paul Overstreet. Amazing!!! Of all
the bad decisions I've made in the last year, that was one of them.
I'd sell anything though to keep things going just to be there when
the good times roll. Was at studio with lobo today. Just like old
times. All guys from old band successful in their own right doing
a cd for Tiawan. Anyway, don't really intend to digress from magic
and am actually working toward my continuing magic building goals
by taking a home study course in metal machining in anticipation
of getting a lathe/mill later this summer. Realtor called today
and said money may come sooner as buyer is hot to get to work on
renovations for a bed and breakfast - we had thought of doing the
same thing, but when Gloria told me I couldn't roam around in my
underwear with paying guests in the house I blew the idea off.
Do you have lecture notes left from Nashville??? Couple of guys
here didn't get a chance to buy them wanted me to ask you? BTW, been
eating a lot of beans and venison, potatoes too!!! Looking 4ward
to seeing Drive! Guys studio at today is a street rod buff - a 32
coupe, chopped and chaneled with electric windows, a 4 litre V6,
air...black with flames. Lobo has a 78 VW convert with less than
6000 miles on it. No music magazines in sight - car books all

It does my heart good when Biro agrees with me. You're correct,
of course, on Devano's first name. The best decks are the ones
with the pins, not the stickum. I think I still have one around.
Loved the effect. Two cards only with the deck rested against a
glass. Most of my work now is walk around so I haven't used it in
a while.
.
Right on bad tricks. I would like to see someone do the 21 card

category also. The metaphor of music arrangements is apt.

In Aesop "the Lion's Share" is ALL -EVERYTHING. I'm not sure
that, when all is taken into account, that there are more rock and
pop concerts. They don't seem to play much in Vegas or Atlantic
City. I may be wrong - maybe Variety or Billboard could settle
the argument.
.
Something can be very mysterious if you have see it before. The
exceptions are those tricks which have a surprise finish. Look at
all the people, including myself, who repeat the card under the
ash tray. I understand Kaps did the card to the wallet as a
repeat number. The lay public doesn't know that "several hundred
other people ca do it". If they did, an the effect and
presentation are good, they would not care.
.

of magic that says if hundreds can do something, it isn't
magical?

and "one up" the audience. This is of course the fault of the

Re: ORIGINALITY

It is MY definition. To be genuinely magical something must have the
appearance of true magic, fantasy magic -- we are supposed to be
playing the parts of REAL MAGICIANS, not imitation magicians. To be
magical something has to be impossible. If one person can do something
he or she is a miracle worker -- but something that hundreds of people
can do is by definition not a miracle, not unusual, and therefore
cannot be magical.
This is all premised on the idea that a stage magician is someone who
simulates real magic, which is my view. Many people view magicians as
just people who know how to do puzzling things; tricksters and/or
entertainers they may be, but do not fit my definition of a magician.

It depends on how the superior attitude is projected, and in what
context; it is unlikely to work for a closeup performer, but may be
very workable on stage. To take just two examples -- Channing Pollock
was very clearly not "just folks"; he projected the air of a superior
being and it worked very well for him. In the present there is Max
Maven. His audiences have no doubt that he is in many ways superior to
them, and Max doesn't necessarily try to hide this; in fact, he has a
lot of fun with it.

Re: CAMILLE PAGLIA

WARNING: The book identified in the following is not recommended
for those who are not familiar with the works of Euripides, for those
who do not make daily distinctions between the Appolonian and the
Dionysian, and for those who only consider Comte Donatien Alphonse
Francois, Marquis de Sade, as a dirty old man.

This Sunday's L.A. Times Magazine had an article on "The Many Masks of
Camille Paglia," by Deanne Stillman. It seemed to me that Ms. Stillman
was so horrified by Paglia that Paglia's book, "Sexual Personae: Art
And Decadence From Nefertiti To Emily Dickinson," (New York: Vintage
Books, 1990, ISBN 0-679-73579-8 [paperback]) would certainly be worth
reading.

I've just started, and for anyone who is really "into" analysis of art
and our culture, this is an incredible book! The New York Times:
"The ability to infuriate both antagonists in an ideological struggle
is often the sign of a first-rate book." Raritan: "Her book
is more interesting than the last five books by Derrida, contains more
psychological wisdom than the complete works of Lacan, tells you better
truths about gender than a whole library of academic feminism, and is
more intriguingly decadent than Robert Mapplethorpe."

Opening the book at random leads to a treasure-trove of bombshell
lines, delivered with Patriot missile precision. Here's a timely one
from page 247 of this 673 page book (718 pages if you count the Notes
and Index):

"Serial or sex murder, like fetishism, is a perversion of male
intelligence. It is a criminal abstraction, masculine in its
deranged egotism and orderliness. It is the asocial equivalent
of philosophy, mathematics, and music. There is no female Mozart
because there is no female Jack the Ripper."

Or how about:

"Decadence is a disease of the western eye. It is an
intensification of the voyeurism latent in all art."

Definitely not for the faint of heart!

Uh David I just noticed the Re title _THE_ MASTER CRYSTAL. I sent

.
A master crystal is one that has 3 faces with 3 edges (small triangle
s) and three faces with 7 edges. They pretty rare. A transmitter
crystal is one with a small 3 edge face and a 7 edge face opposite,
with the remaining four faces somewhat symetrical.

Re: PSYCHIC SURGEONS

Ee;
Went to an interesting lecture tonight on the 'psychic surgeons' of
the phillipines. Some of the most graphic video I've ever witnessed.
.
I asked about the claim that Randi had made that the blood and 'stuff
they pull out have been analyzed and were actually chicken parts. He
said they do use some 'foreign' material to make the healing more
dramatic for westerners, who would not be as impressed with the
straight psychic healing. It's kind of the placebo effect, using
blood and 'stuff' helps the patient 'believe' in the otherwise
invisible psychic healing that is really occuring.

Thank you, Jerry! I wish Joe Stevens was already on-line, so he could
see your endorsement of Nathan's attendance. I agree that it would be
unwise to permit just any kid to attend, but, then again, there are
some 40 and 50 and 60 year old kids who get to attend only because of
the age on their driver's license.

You are right, for ordinary kids there isn't a lot to do in Vegas. And
the babysitting costs are astronomical (as well as our intense dislike
of leaving him with strangers). The cost of a sitter will exceed the
registration cost for the convention! Easily!

Nathan likes the shows - he's been to Melinda's and Copperfields, and
is looking forward to Burtons (the other ones, although I think he will
want to see yours too).

Hi Pete! I don't know the fellows name with the cap on the Moscow

success in that direction, I know another way of contacting them, with
the ususal few days delay. (Them meaning the Russian performers in
general) So let me know if you need to initiate another way of
communicating with them!
.
Also, since seeing an earlier message fromT A, maybe the message Joe
prints could read "Any magician accompanied by a significant other who
is also a Non-magician...." Very wordy, yes, but these are such
complex times....

Re: WHERE WOULD WE BE

I don't mean to jump in on an on-going conversation, but since Cy did
mention my name, along with correctly remembering my affection for the
Master Mind group train of thought, I'll add a couple of comments on
the originality topic.
.
I believe many magicians tend to make two false assumptions when it
comes to this topic. First false assuption is that they believe that
they should be the sole engineer of the end result. That they alone
should be the creator of the magic, the writer of the script, the
director, the choreographer, etc.... In reality, beyond performing
ethically, he only has the professional responsibility to deliver the
best performance possible, considering the group and the situation.
But the sole architect? No - no more than an actor should be expected
to write the play, or the artist should be expected to build the brush.
.
Someone, I believe in relation to this topic, has said something about
how Michelangelo wouldn't paint just any picture, or something like
that. I happen to agree. But also, my observation after several trips
to Florence, Italy, and to Rome, was that EVERYONE from that time
period painted a Holy Family, and EVERYONE did a Madonna and child, and
EVERYONE did a Pieta. It seems to me, it isn't what you do, but how
you do it. It's not the subject, but the skill and the personal
expression.
.
As far as using other peoples material is concerned, you have to ask
yourself, what kind of career do you want, and where you are on the
learning curve. I tend to think the best first step, if not the first
essential step for learning something, is imitation. To learn how to
do something, you first imitate how others do it. Children imitate
their parents when they learn to walk, and young performers learn to
perform by imitating the movements of professionals
.
Learning a lot of things for a professional career is like digging a
deep foundation for a building. The deeper the foundation, the bigger
the building can be. In gathering this broad base of information for
your career, you'll need to learn a lot of things from imitating
others.
.
But in a professional career, too much imitation can hold you back.
The step of imitation is just for stepping, and not for stopping. An
imitation isn't an expression, and the upper levels of any performance
Art requires a personal expression.
.
On the other hand, if you don't have any particular career or artistic
ambitions, yet are still driven to perform for some reason, then I
would certainly hope that you take advantage of the industry that has
been created that offers performance material for a price. I say this
because if, at that evel of ambition you feel you also have to be
original, then you'll probably be hurting the industry everytime you
perform. Why? Because that level of motivation would rarely produce
something better than a John Kennedy could create, or a Johnny Gaughan
could build, or a Stephan Minch could script. It's probably best that
this person just buy, imitate, and deliver the best they're capable of.
.
If there is a mystery, it is as T A has pointed out - with so little to
do, just choose and imitate. Why do so many choose the same effects?
.
Finally, I mentioned that magicians tend to operate under two false
assumptions. The second false assumption, I believe, is that the
public actually CARES about any of this. Incredibly, there are still
laymen that call David "DOUG" Copperfield, and none have EVER mentioned
to me that Copperfield is doing an illusion that the Pendragons are
doing, or anyone else, for that matter. I never encounter anything
ever close to this. Maybe things are different for people who are
members of the Magic Castle, but that is still a very, very tiny sliver
of the population. In Texas, I don't think I've ever mentioned the
Castle to someone who has heard of it, and as often as not, I'll
mention Magic Island to someone who actually lives in Houston, and they
won't have heard of it, either. As soon as you start interacting with
a non-magic crowd, the familiarity for all this drops way, way down.
.
So I now realize I've rambled on at length, and since I don't have a
chance to read all the messages, I hope I haven't been too redundant
with what others have said before!
