Great quote from Brownmiller. Neither of the two women is top

about magic. Female magicians shouldn't go to a man's hotel room

they do copy. I hope there will not be a magic chanel. I see
enough bad comics - hate to see that many bad magicians. Can't do

Do you think that Bizarre Magick with its attempt to create an
atmosphere of mystery (in perhaps a seance setting) offers more of
an opportunity for magic theatre than other forms ?

Re: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

The problem which most people seem to be missing about Joe
Stevens seems no to be gender. All magicians pay full price. Non
magicians, accompanying a magician, get a reduction. The
assumption is that a travelling companion doesn't have to pay
full price. A married couple, both performers, would both have to
pay full price.

Re: ORIGINALITY

The problem with doing magic is the venue. In performaing close-
up I wouldn't do rope tricks. In an impromptu situation I
certainly would rather produce something for someone who is
hungry. However, I you are hired to perform in a walk-around
situation, you should be able to use coins, cards and linking
pins. These are the things I use. When you are hired to perform
you should be able to use any props that YOU have.

T A Waters beat me to the answer, but I ALWAYS give
kids books. Gender-schmender. Books are simply the
best gift. (Sorry to say I haven't seen any worthwhile
magic sets since I was a kid myself and Gilbert was
still in business. Have occasionally given a single
Tenyo item.) And I always give first babies a copy of
GOODNIGHT MOON. Must have given a couple of dozen over
the years. It won't be long until the parents can read
the kid to sleep with it.

Am still working on that restaurant name. My sister in
Atlanta hasn't responded on Prodigy all weekend.

Do you want to upload a FILE to the Files area? If so, you can go to
the Files area - F from the Main Menu (and, of course, press ENTER),
then U and ENTER to UPLOAD and then follow the prompts. When
MAGIC! tells you it is ready and waiting, you can tell COMit (or
whatever you may be using) to begin the upload. Yes, there is a
protocol selection menu that will appear automatically during the
upload process.

Uploading MESSAGES is different - depends on whether you want to upload
one or several.

I _HOPE_ to have the real PASSPORT TO MAGIC! books revised and worked
out and sent to those who have already ordered them, and available as
well, by DMS.

Re: CAMILLE PAGLIA

If the women you ask about profession or occupation tell you it is the
first time they have been asked, then you can be pretty sure they
haven't met me first. I generally ask, unless I've been briefed in
advance regarding that info.

However, that only substitutes one criteria for another. Why not go
for the throat and start out by asking their I.Q.? When I was a Mensa
member, that was a favorite form of introduction - "Hi, I'm Sally (or
Marvin) Simpleton and my I.Q. is 165."

Tonite I've read ahead (which, depending on where you are in the
message base may, for you, now be behind) and I find that Cy has hit
the nail on the head.

By the way, when I'm asked about my profession or occupation, something
I regard as a trivia question, I vary my answer to suit the setting an
my mood - writer, training developer, computer programmer, mage,
househusband . . . Whatever.

Sorry, T. A., but I regard one form of social conditioning as just as
unreasonable as another. How about we work out a plan to condition
everyone, regardless of race, creed, color, sex, gender, or preference
for any of the above, to regard magic as the most important thing in
the world - now THAT might be progress!

Yep, and all kids get for birthday gifts any more are books. About as
much fun as raincoats (and, lest I offend anyone who is "into"
raincoats, please remember, I'm talking about little kids here).

Nathan has a library already that rivals sections of my own. Kids
should get some fun stuff - perhaps even things that their parents
wouldn't normally give them. Of course, I still want to kill the
parent who gave goldfish as a party favor - we're giving their kid a
scorpion for his next birthday.

Frankly, I agree that there should be a flat fee for all, male, female,
deaf, dumb, blind, straight, gay, black, white, and purple with yellow
stripes, for God's sake! Are they THAT afraid that a non-magician
might show up and actually LEARN something? Case in point: I brought
a co-worker of mine, interested in magic to an I.B.M. ring meeting.
They showed a card video and at the end, each effect was explained in
great detail. Sandra sat there and watched the entire video. On the
way home, she turned to me and saud "That was interesting, but I had NO
IDEA what he was talking about!" I would love to see the following
payment structure at one of David Copperfield's shows:
People who have no idea what the hell is going on - $50
People who have a vague idea of what is happening - $40
People who really DO know what is going on - $30
Magicians who don't know David - $20
Magicians who DO know David - $10
Sleezy broads who want to see David's "magic wand" - $5
Anybody else - forget it.
Now wouldn't THAT cause a stir!

Re: WHAT A WOMAN CAN DO

Well, guys, I am just a WOMAN but I think I did something pretty neat
and I want to share it. Besides being on of THEM, I am also a writer
as David Copperfield can tell you. I wrote apoem for him a long time
ago and he liked it. Recently there was a poetry contest and for want
of something better to do, I shortened the poem I wrote for David,
added a few new lines and sent it in. I didn't expect much, after all
WOMEN can't do anything right. Well, yesterday I received a check in
the mail that will buy me some new magic, and my poem is being
published in a new book "The Best Poems of the '90s". So I thought I
would share it with all of you:
                      THE GREATEST ILLUSION
As every performer of magic should know
The greatest illusion comes after the show
Without silk or rabbit. without wand or dove
The greatest illusion is unselfish love
Take the laughter of children, the song of the lark
The sparkle of fireflies just after dark
All the colors of the rainbow, the dew on a rose
Warm summer sand as it sifts through your toes
The moon as it glitters on new fallen snow
The joy of watching a new baby grow
The sweetness of finding your one true love
The echoing call of the mourning dove
Keep all of these images locked in your heart
And from this true magic, never depart
For the greates illusion is found on no shelf
It's the magic one gives when he gives of himself

and Roy - there's TWO of them. Buy one, get one free? Ditto the
Pendragons. But Char is (GASP!) a FEMALE! Get's confusing doesn't it?

Re: FARES TO SLC

To clear up some of the confusion over the fares to , as the President
of the Magicians Travel Network, the fares I listed were PROMOTIONAL
through MTN ONLY. Don't call America West to find these fares - they
won't know what you're talking about. I am able to give discounts on
fares through a SPECIAL that I worked out, using a promotion on
Continental and it is shared with America West. If you will look in
the April issue of MAGIC magazine you will see a coupon good for $100
towards your next trip. Using this coupon, I based the fare on what is
CURRENTLY being offered as base fare from America West. These fares
are NOT written in stone. I cannot predict the airlines any more than
I can fly to the moon (I'll let Copperfield do that one!). Just wanted
to clear up any misunderstand.

WRONG!!! Anita enjoys the shows, but doesn't attend the lectures (nor
does she usually attend the Ladies' Event), but the two tiered pricing
does permit her access to the parts of the Seminar that she does like,
it encourages her to be involved with magic, and strengthens our
family's magical cohesiveness. I assume that it could do the same for
any couple, regardless of their genetic, sex, or gender composition.

The real problem in this case is not gender discrimination, it is _AGE_
discrimination! Work Joe over about Nathan! He's really looking
forward to Desert Magic and I haven't told him yet that he is not going
to be allowed to attend (he has an offer to be in one of the shows, if

Hello Birokind,

know how many pages I've got so far, I do not print it out all

suggests itself one or more other subjects. It overwhelmes a bit
at times, there are so many little things to explain. I suppose
it will be quite a task for Stephen Minch too, to refine my
writings!
Actually, some discussions here on the board, give me subjects
too. Some things I do not see as problems at all, and yet, it
turns out that certain thoughts, which I feel as so logical that
they do not deserve mentioning in the book, are not so logical to
others, and so may be I should mention my thoughts on some of
those things as well. ---

Re: FARES TO SLC AND EVERYWHE

The promotional coupon is available to every member of MAGIC! There is
no need to duplicate the coupon here or to send it in. Merely mention
MAGIC! and it is yours when upi call. The MTN number, once again is
1-800-749-5520. As I stated before, the contract I have with the
airlines (America West, Continental and TWA) is of my own doing and
available through MTN for the magic community. It is my committment to
provide the very best personalized service I can. Also, one thing to
remember is this: the ticket that I sell you through MTN is ticketied
at the lowest fare AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. Should the fares go DOWN,
I can refund the difference to you immediately, because through your
membership I track your PNR (personal name record) until you have
flown. The airlines doesn't give a rats ass if the fare goes down or
not. They will NOT call you, simply because they sell too many tickets
to do so. They leave this strictly up to the consumer. IF you choose
to buy your ticket from the airlines and the fare goes down afetr you
purchase it, you have 24 HOURS after the fare goes down to bring it TO
THE AIRLINES (NOT a travel agent) for a refund of the difference. I am
NOT trying to sell you a bill of goods, here. Only trying to give you
your options. MTN works, because I CARE about all of you and don't
want to see you spend money you don't have to. That's my promise to
all of you.

Re: NEW ONBOARD

Thank you for all your input. Is there anyother places, preferably in
the San Fernando Valley area?

I enjoy the impromptu type close-up magic, but lately I get so little
time to practice. As I said, I am an electrical engineer and father of
two very active boys (3.5 & 1.5). I am also working on a kids show to
hopefully start doing for birthday parties. My weakest point has got
to be patter. I can do the manipulations, but my creativity of speach
is lacking. ( I know I spelled 'speech' wrong. It word wrapped on me
before I could fix it, and it is not worth editing the line. )

I can at least practice palming and some coin slights at work. It is
quite a challenge to type and classic palm a half. It is getting
better.

One more question. Since I am not a member, and diapers are more
important right now, could someone explain the benifits of being a
Castle member. I understand that membership covers the admission fee
and you are not required to buy dinner there, but what are some of the
other things that make membership special?

Re: NEW ONBOARD

A good place (resturant) to see magic is the Airtel Plaza, right here
in the S.F. Valley. Call to confirm, but on most Friday nights, Marvyn
Roy performs there. When you make a reservation, you can specifically
ask to have him at your table.

Regular (magician) membership in the Castle also includes the right to
vote, to attend the lectures, to use the library, and to get the
newsletter telling you about what it going on. You can also bring
guests and can send guests by giving them guest cards.

Maybe Geno Munari can answer the question about the content of
Melinda's new show. I personally doubt there would have been much
time to change it. Lance Burton's show... to quote laymen I have
brought "Gee, I like this better than Siegfried and Roy's show"...
There would be a resemblance to the Barclay Shaw plexi box, in
that someone floats inside a plexi box... but the EFFECT is very
different. There are those that believe it is too close to the
same... I think they are right, but I don't think the lay audiences
percieve a resemblance. Barclay's is small and horizontal and
is "ASSEMBLED" around the floating woman. It is VERY CLEVER and
one of the best ideas in years. Copperfield's is a large, square
boxlike affair that he "flies into" and the lid is put on and he
continues to gyrate about inside... looking much like a fish in
an huge tank, then he walks upside down on the top while a girl
walks around on the top (outside)... While Inspired, I am sure,
by Barclay's my feeling is that it is different enough.
The handling and actions of the large hoops Copperfield uses
is excellent, and I understand was developed by he and his staff.
It is a very convincing segment...

Re: ORIGINALITY

NO. First the Neff Rope trick, as purchased uses a cheap catgut
pull. I use a Martin Take up Reel -- but a keychain pull back would
work. The rope is set as per the usual way for the Neff and you
enter IN THE PULL (this is an opener or MC way to do it -- I have
other very original ways to use in the middle of a routine)...
.
The rope is PRE cut and you sew in the little devices called "Alarm"
made like a fire cracker with string at each end. Pull the strings
and BAM smoke, noise EXPLOSION.... Then put the ropes back together
with rubber cement.
.
When you jerk the pieces apart the bomb goes off. When you toss
the rope out or up... the short piece goes up the sleeve and you
stretch out the rope so it appears to be the original piece owing
to its length being the same...
.
You toss it out, but it falls short into the orchestra pit (if
there is one) ... if someone catches it and notes the "work"
on the rope (not much is left) it don't matter the other 3,500
in my average audience are baffled.
.
I did this at Tannen's Jubilee once and had 2 very knowledgable
guys come rushing backstage asking me how I switched the rope.
Hah... told them no switch, nothing to find... (OK I lied)!f
but that's ok, I'm a real magician.
.,
Or as Jay Marshall said, when a guy was asked if he was a REAL
GAMBLER, the dude replied, "NO, I'm just a casekeeper!"

Thornton reel is used for Dekolta Card Fountain. I use the Charlie
Miller thread set up, have the reel on a holder inside my jacket.
Cards brought out, riffle force (the threading is hidden by your
handposition) the one card not threaded. Pick up glass, set cards
into glass... say, "YOUR CARD WILL JUMP OUT OF THE DECK"...
Release grip on thread, 51 CARDS fly out of the glass... and ONE
CARD ( the selected one ) is remaining in glass... thread is gone
into reel and you hand the glass with the card in it to the
spectator... ONE OF THE GREAT EFFECTS OF ALL TIME.

I don't think it will cost you your job, but you are right - the age
barrier was created by some powerful folks close to Joe (it doesn't

respect for, magic by getting to go to those things, not by beinng told

the Castle for brunch, only we had to meet her in Long Beach instead.
Nathan was really crushed and hated the whole affair because it wasn't

Re: WHERE WOULD WE BE

It's indeed a real problem. Who can tell who is stealing from whom.
If I knew J.C. and saw Bob perform I would assume that Bob stole
from J.C. when in fact the exact opposite may be the case.
.
If you saw Rich Moratta and his bird doo-doo and then saw Johnnie
Thompson you might think that JT was the thief.
.
If you saw Joycee Beck perform the 'mongolian pop knot' rope routine
and then saw Whit Haydn you might think that Whit stole the routine.
.
Certainly any lay audience is going to get the wrong impression as
they don't really know (or care even) who originated what. They just
wonder why several magicians seem to do the same tricks WITH
EXACTLY the same lines and intonation, etc. If any of these people
then go into magic, they are pre-conditioned that stealing is OK,
since the 'pros' do it to each other, they can too -since no one will
know where the line came from and GET THE BENEFIT OF SOMEONE ELSE'S
WORK - FOR FREE !!

you into the lectures (after all the original reason for the discount
was that wifes didn't want to go to the lectures so he gave a discoun

nothing to do with it - as they shouldn't have in the first place.

Jerry Seinfeld. I have worked with him. We opened and closed a
club in one night some time back! Hah... Actually the owner didn't
have a live entertainment permit and got caught.
.
The problemo is this... Jerry works the comedy club circuit (altho
now with his own tv series he has backed off of the clubs) and
after having just viewed over 30 tapes from Magi on the club circuit
I can see why that attitude.
.
Nearly EVERY ONE OF THEM produced a rubber dove, then rolled it up.
.
Nearly EVERY ONE OF THEM did the same lines.
.
Nearly EVERY ONE OF THEM was LOUSY.
.
Nearly EVERY ONE OF THEM would have trouble looking good on a
Dealer Show at a Bolivian Convention.
.
Nearly EVERY ONE OF THEM got a reject letter.

YOU HIT IT DUDE.... MAGICALMPKIN ALWAYS SAY "he/she didn't show
enuf tricks" they don't give a whit about what really counts. They
don't know nuttin, honey...
.
There was a recent letter in Stan Allens Magic (the Magazine)
wherein the dude writing it wanted to know why the major conventions
don't have lectures on make up, presentation, thinking, devoloping
routines, tax regs, etc. etc. Well, when we did... the audiences
would get up and walk out.
.
I remember Christian Stelzel (Magic Christian from Austria) lectured
and began with some wonderful card manipulations. And then said,
"YOU CANNOT DO THESE UNLESS CERTAIN MUSCLES IN YOUR FINGERS ARE
DEVELOPED"... he then ran thru some finger excercises... and
they almost booed him outa the place... standing and screaming...
MORE TRICK MORE TRICKS NO MUSCLES NO MUSCLES MORE TRICKS.
.

ARGH! (tm - Biro) on the C drive! You gotta be careful with them
things! By the way - here is a computer hint for MS-DOS users who have
other people using their computers (or who don't want to make mistakes
of their own) - the FORMAT command is located in an extrnal file (a
part of DOS that is a separate program). You can take FORMAT.EXE _OFF_
of your hard disk and put it on a diskette that you put away. Now your
hard disk is not very likely to get formatted by accident.

I think you toss bits of fondue to the alligators. Alligators is great
folks - I used to work at a radio station in Florida (one of several I

transmitter site out in the swamp. We used to have an alligator who
would growl at you as you walked from the car to the building. Most of
us who worked night out there used to walk with a gun in our hands,
just in case the 'gator forgot about being polite.

Yeah, aim. I'm trying to teach Nathan to do that.

There was a completely different, but very nice, "Cards To Glass" by
Len Sewell. I think it was in Genii in November, 1977. I've got some
mods to it, changing it into a 4-Ace bit.

One "trick" to doing cards in glasses effects is to have the right size
glasses! You can find 'em by taking one of the throw away ad cards
from a deck and carrying it with you, in your wallet, purse or pocket
alla time. When you spot some good looking glasses, you can check 'em
with the card.

No???? Maybe my explanation was too short. So no magnets - rubber
cement. OK. Not Thornton - I should have realized with your
British connectionsk, you'd use a Martins. Is this the one for
the birdcage? Don't know what the Alarm thing is. Howie
Schwarzman does this effect with a holdout. Maybe it is slightly
different, it's been some time. The rubber cement is better than
the magnets if someone gets the rope. Cornelious Flash with
rubber cement would give them nothing to see - much.

Bizarre magic is hard to present as acting may be more difficult
than magic. I don't like it because I'm one of the inincere. I
hope not one of the incompetent. Sure it is clearly theater, but
dishonest in that it is presented as being actual - not theater.

Re: WHERE WOULD WE BE

Well some of the non-trick lectures can be a bit misleading. I
remember a 'lecture' at DMS a few years ago entitled 'How to Work
Coventions' or 'Inside Conventions' or something like that. It was
billed as the ins and outs of getting magic work at trade show conven
tions. I went and was thoroughly disappointed.
.
Judging by the panel I thought it would be a gold-mine, Karrel Fox,
Mike Rodgers, Roger Klaus, moderated by Stan Allen.
.
I didn't learn a damn thing. It was just a bunch of guys sitting
around telling 'war' stories of their experiences at trade shows.
Stan tried to get them to focus on the issues, but Karrel just
kept telling stories, Roger didn't say much, and Mike tried to
answer the questions.
.
It was obviously an impromptu event and truly missed what it was
billed as.
.
To make up for it Tommy Wonder gave an excellant lecture complete
with theory behind why he did the effects the way he did. He
showed enough 'tricks' to make the 'trick phreques' happy, with a
large helping of theory and philosophy. It was 'Wonder'ful.
.
I guess lectures are a lot like magic shows, you have to see a lot of
'bad' ones to be able to see the 'good' ones. Just like magic there
isn't much in between.

You must have a different definition of 'bizarre' magic than I do.
Your definition seems to include a 'rite' which I agree is not enter-
tainment, it is for a special purpose - NOT ENTERTAINMENT.
.
An example of a 'classic' bizarre effect is Andruzzi's 'Blister
Trick' with the proper presentation it is truly mysterious and gets
a great response. There is no 'rite' per se but the effect 'proves'
that 'demons' were present.

Some of this thinking starts with the printed record. I have actually
been CRITICIZED for pointing out credits on published effects which had
not been provided by the writer -- "...that stuff isn't important, I
have better things to do with my time." People get the idea that magic
just "appears like magic" -- that no one sits down and invents this
stuff. As I have oft said, it is a very small step from not caring who
invented something to NOT CARING HOW YOU GET IT.

Whit's rope routine finish "Mongolian Pop Knots" is an excellent,

Before that it was the Conway (Pat) handling, which Ken Brooke

MONGOLIAN or POP KNOTS.... and I would not use the idea of pulling

Actually, few people can ever do material as good as the creator,
'cause they don't really KNOW ENOUGH about the real presentation
the creator had in mind.

Darned if I know... all I know is when highlighted a directory,
(Procomm) the lower window showed 'NO FILES'... scared the woo woo
out of me... I exited, went into Norton to see if I needed to do
the UNERASE procedure (which works like a champ) and darned if
all the files were OK... musta been some fluke message error? ARgh.

Re: ETHICS DIALOGUE

Nick Charles had a pretty reasonable approach. When I was in high
school, I had a teacher who, at home, used to shoot flies off the walls
and ceiling, using a 22. On weekends, a few friends and I used to go
out to the swamps with him to shoot water moccasins (the snakes, not
the shoes). He was a great influence on me - thank you for reminding
me of him.

OK - would be GOOD to post the final DMS schedule here for everyone.
I was just gonna save you the work if you wanted to faxe it to me.
But tomorrow may be unreliable - Nathan came home sick from school
today and I have a funny feeling I'm not gonna get much work done
tomorrow.

Yeah, well, maybe the stage itself is wooden, but there is more room to
do stuff. The Sahara stage was too wide and not very tall - it was
like cinemascope with no headroom. And the backstage area was
horrible.

Re: XTREE MYSTERY

I can tell you what you did to get the "No files!" message in Xtree.
You must have hit "F" (for Filespec), then another letter. What this
did was to inform the program that you "wanted" to see listed only
those files which consisted of that latter letter for their names --
and of course, there weren't any, hence the "No files!" message.

Re: NO SALE

Tabby, hope you are doing ok. Man, if you don't absolutely have to
sell your library - don't. The worst thing about being in the used
book business is having to see someone sell their library. It's an
emotional thing. I know it sounds corny, but it's true. Only sale,
once you know you no longer want or need it.
Regarding FFFF, I'm suppose to room with Charlie MacFarland, a local
guy. He's the Continental pilot David heard about. Pretty good
close-up guy, does some trade-show work when he's not busy flying. I
don't know just what Charlie has arranged, but if need be, I'd bet we
could squeeze you in. I'm really looking forward to FFFF. I hope we
can spend some more time with Mike and learn some more really great
stuff.
  Later,
                                        Charlie

Re: DISKETTES

No, but I could go get one. The thing is, I know it is a 1.44 drive
because I have a bunch of diskettes here that have backup data on them
which was done on fastback, before I crashed the hard drive that time.
Theses diskettes which worked before, do not work now. Nonetheless,
I'll pick up a couple 720's and try to format them.
Oh, another thing. I have a tape drive..And if I change the driver
command in the config.sys, the machine goes to the tape drive when I
boot up, and gets lost in no man's land.

Re: DISKETTES

I wasn't suspecting that the drive wasn't a 1.44, I just wanted to see
if the controller and drive were able to handle a 720. That might tell
us that at least the messages were going OK between the controller and
the drive. Yeah, it shouldn't want to talk to the tape drive on boot
up. I hate to say it, but, more and more, it sounds like Award should
get a look at the beast. They're the ones you have the credit with?

I just ran a few 720's through. They work fine. I didn't try to
