To: Lynn Healy... are you sure they don't have lox burritos? How
ya doin? Havn't had sushi lately, but last night I undercooked the
chicken a little... so was almost raw... (just kidding)!
.
Not much happening here... trying to finish signing all the acts
for Salt Lake City... got some surprises. New illusion will blow
em away... Guy has what I thought a Zombie Ball, walks up onto
a high, elevated platform, held up with four Greek Columns. Very
simple. He poses... the ball comes in two and he is left holding
a large silvery foulard. Up in front of him, chest high. LESS THAN
1 SECOND he whips it aside and there is a girl floating there.
Sudden appearance. AGA set up... now way to figure where she comes
from. Base of course... but is super thin and above stage about
six feet.
.
She does usual up and down, Blaney Hoop, then he covers her...
ala Asrah... and POOF she is gone...
.
I'm telling you... Jay Marshall, Bill Wells, Obie O'Brien and Joe
Stevens... all sitting watching the tape SHOUTED... WHOA... PLAY
THAT AGAIN...WOW...
.
He also does a stunt where a card is chosen, he produces a huge
bird (Cocatoo?)... throws the cards high in the air, the bird flies
out, thru the cards and grabs one from the air... lands on his
shoulder... and YEP... is the chosen card. Superb stuff.
.
Name witheld until IBM ad breaks... hahahaha... later

you have the complete schedule (and haven't already done so, since I
just logged on and started reading) perhaps you can either post it or
fax it to me?

Yeah, Sesame Street ain't bad when you are feelin' sick. Mr. Rogers is
even better. And Sherri Lewis is back! On PBS in the mornings,
Lambchop and all. Fortunately, I got a little MAGIC! work done too and
got the message base at least reduced a little. The back message files
are now in the FILES area.

Re: DESERT MAGIC

Is there anyone going to DMS for Friday and Saturday night ONLY? I
would like to share my room - oh, crud! How do I put this? Okay,
let's see. I am NOT looking for a bed partner! I am simply going to
be coming to Vegas alone, and frankly, that thought scares me half to
death. Here's the deal. I am a travel agent and for ME the rate is
$69 per night. I have to leave Saturday night, but what I would do is
check in Friday night using my I.D. and then if anyone wanted to stay
Saturday they could just stay under my name and we would pay when we
checked in Friday (I pay $69 and you pay $69). Ideally, I would like
another female to share with but they seem to be in pretty short supply
around here. Soooo...I am pretty liberal, and this would be for
convention purposes ONLY! Do I make myself CLEAR??? Besides, I am
happily married and want to stay that way. So why am I offering to
share a room? Because I'm SCARED to be alone in Vegas. And that's
about it!

We had some great times at Yogi (no "e"). I remember one night I
had someone call out a number and then someone call out the name

of the evening was one of the assistants.
.
Another night we had Scotty York, Tim Conover and a lot of other
heavies. I think Schwazman worked too. For others listening in,
the Yogi club was run by Phil Thomas as an adjunct to the Yogi Magic
Mart - his shop.

Stacey,

Here is my latest info:

Friday

9:30 Aldo Columbini and Lennart Green show and lectures
     (alternate groups)

11:00 Rene Lavand show and lecture (group A)

11:00 Finn Jon show and lecture (group B)

1:30 Comedy Challenge Show #2

7:30 All-star closeup show

10:00 S & R at the Mirage (extra charge event)

Saturday

9:30 Aldo and Lennart again (alternate groups)

11:00 Finn Jon (group A)

11:00 Rene Lavand (group B)

2:00 S & R backstage tour

7:30 Early Lance Burton (extra charge)

9:30 Party at the Hacienda

10:30 Late Lance Burton (extra charge)

By all means try to make as much as you can! It's a
shame you are apparently going to miss the contests, as
I always find this the best part of the convention.
Personally I hope to see S&R earlier in the week and
therefore have Friday open to see one of the other
shows in town. Have a ticket for the late Lance Burton
on Saturday. Of course, magic goes on LATE each night
at the Trop because of so many magicians around, and
this is also a great thing to partake of.

Re: SHOOTING STAR

Actually, Frank's claim for the Master Deck was that the total amount
of material clocked in at 80 hours. I never saw all of it... but what
I did see was substantial.

I spent a lot of time with Frank Thompson during his last several years
(his mother lived in the Boston area, so he spent a lot of time up
there), and the one thing that remained constant was that whenever he
made a claim which sounded fanciful he was able to back it up.

Re: NEW ONBOARD

Stephen,
As one of the newest members of the Castle, I'll partially answer
your question.
It is a great deal of fun to watch someone's face light up when
you mention the castle. To then be able to give that person a
guest pass to go to a place they'd only heard of is wonderful.
I haven't had much opportunity to take advantage yet, but members
also get library priveledges. Being able to research in the
Castle library is worth the price of admission.
As a political consultant, it is fun to take prospective clients
to the Castle, and flash a card to get in.
Besides the things you mentioned, parking is cheaper as a member.
If you go 7 times a month, parking alone pays for your
membership.
It fills me with enjoyment to go to the Castle, and find people I
know. To have someplace to sit and chat. Great fun.
Hope that answer some of your question.
Enjoy!

preliminary documentation for IMP! together as well. Right now, I've
got a heck of a headache/sinus attack, so please pardon brief
responses.

I know it is tough to do on a case by case basis. And, of course, we
are always ready to whip Nathan out of any venue in which could
misbehave, although he never has when it comes to a magic show. I just
know that he is going to be heartbroken not to be able to attend DMS
shows.

Nathan's birthday is September 19th. Last year he planned the party,
including the guest list (all kids in his age bracket), the
entertainment (Clownzo and himself), and the design and composition of
the cake. He hasn't confided this year's plans to me yet.

Have you found cases where the 'creator' (i.e. the writer) really

Conversely, do some writers try to take credit for prior obscure

What is PCPursuit ? I checked on Reach out Calif and its an ATT
product that only applies to calls outside your principal service
area. Since Arleta is within my service area it doesn't apply.

I'm considering having one of my business lines converted to a

only drawback is it only applies after 9 pm

In my opinion, even though Dickens was a very good writer, Copperfield
was not his premier work...I'll have to defer to A Christmas Carol or
Bleak House. Nicholas Nicklby (sp?) was a far second to those above
(why hasn't anyone taken up that name for a magic moniker?). I would
rather talk about the works of Vladimir Nabokov instead though, how
'bout that Lolita, huh?

Sounds like quite a deal! Too bad I live here or I'd take you up

you'll be too busy trying to find time to sleep! I know you don't
know me (yet!) but I've been lurking here for over a year now, I
just don't talk much.

I'm looking forward to meeting the (In)famous Stacey and the rest
of the gang at DMS as I **_finally registered!_**
This is a first for me, as usually as soon as I register, I'm
scheduled to go out of town, (it's happened now four out of the
last five years). I finally convinced them that I'd be more
valuable to them at home this year (and they bought it!).

Sorry I can't help with the room, but I'll be happy to show you
(and anyone else that can fit in the van) the sights while you're
here.

Sorry, I haven't been on much lately, been too busy playing
(working?) with my new toys to talk. I just converted to Windows
3.0 (sorry Pete, will you ever forgive me?) and I'm having a
BLAST!

Talk about when it rains it pours!
My arsenal now includes:
PageMaker
PhotoStyler
Publisher's Paintbrush
Corel Draw
and a color printer should land on the doorstep next week.

Now I hope I live long enough to learn how to use this stuff!

Oh yeah, last week I installed a Truevision VideoVGA display
card, allowing me to output VGA text and graphics directly to a
TV monitor and/or VCR. It comes with something called TITLER, so
now I can add credits and titles to my videos.

I finally enjoy going to work. David, (it's too late for this
year, but) if you like, I can work it out so several room
monitors can display MAGIC! in action. I'm experimenting with
recording a sample session just to see how it looks. If it works,
I'll send you a copy. Maybe next year's session could include
this.

See you at DMS!

Gadzooks! You DO drag up some memories. My fondest Yogi Club
memories are from the old shop of Phil's (before the fire) in that
old room upstairs with the photo's of the old Demon's Club. Those
dudes sitting around the table with devil caps and horns added a
certain ambiance. I even remember you doing the call out a number,
call out a card effect that you did....and that my "woman of the
evening" (tricky wording there) was your assistant. I remember
Raymond backpalming an entire deck and doing the card in the walnut
in the egg as well. In fact, I even appeared on the bill a time or
two. Frank always did his stuff in the side room in Phil's shop
before the meetings. That was a REL magic shop and all the
characters to go with it.

Steven Pellegrino and Mike Keating. Both worked for Copperfield. Did
you know them? Can't wait to meet you!
I would LOVE to see the sights of Vegas, other than the infamous strip.
Mike used to have a van that you couldn't roll the windows down at all.
I used to call it the test car for Ban Roll On. It didn't have seats
either, except for the driver, so I used to bounce around like a pea in
a drum. If your van is like Mike's could you warn me so I can bring my

If you are talking about the Neff Rope trick? I have a method I
once lectured on where the short piece of rope does not go up
the sleeve, but is rolled into a small ball by a mechanical "Silk

When I get into an effect I almost always devise about 3 or 4 ways
to do it... so it can be done under various circumstances.

Re: CASTLE SHOW

Well as I thought it would be. Last night at the castle was an "E"
ticket. Got there late, say 9:15 and went straight back stage to visit
with Ed and his crew. They said things had been going well with the
show and were thrilled that the new effect was working, though they
thought it needed reworking and would tackle that after the run this
week. I chatted with Terry of "LES AND TERRY" briefly and then made my
way to seatsawaiting myself and another of Ed's party. Sat next to
Geno Michalenni (sp) who does the afternoon drive on KLOS. He has a
great thing he does to promote live comedy and variety in L.A. called
the "FIVE O'CLOCK FUNNIES". It airs Monday thru Friday and besides
playing comedy bits, he promotes both comedy and other variety acts.
He was a great guy to talk with and after the show we had drinks and
chatted about "stuff". But back to the show. The room was packed and
the audience was quite "electric" Brian (offstage) introduvced LES and
TERRY and they came on with a great deal of energy. Very strong dove
act with lots of new bits and suprises not sen in most dove acts. VERY
NICE INDEED! They did nine minutes of dove stuff and as the act
progressed the birds got bigger, concluding with a full grown Macaw
(sp). A must see act and one I hope they bring back soon. Terry told
me that this was the first time they had played the Castle. I'm sure
it won't be the last. Then Ed came out and did 30. That's right 30
very quick and magic packed minutes. His material is very tested and
strong. No fat, very lean. I have seen the act many times and it
still remains fresh. After the show I had drinks, as mentioned above,
and then went to the basement and traded effects with a very nice
magicain from San Diego. We stayed there until one and then moved to
the upstairs bar where we visited and traded effects with Bob Kohler.
Ended up being the last guy at the Castle and they pushed me ot
locking the door behind me. Wow! What a great night of MAGIC!!!! I
could do the same thing every night. Maybe that's why I can't keep a
woman. Wished you could have been there. Maybe next time.

PC-Pursuit is a public packet switching network (for those who know
what that is!). It is a network for modem only calls and it works at
night and on weekends (it exists in the daytime, but is used for
corporate data transfers and costs a bunch more). Anyway, $30 (I
think - maybe $35) gets you something like _30_ _hours_ of time per
month. You have to create a special script that dials a local access
code and that then switches you to the "outdial node" near MAGIC! and
then dials MAGIC! For more info, I think you can call Telenet
(PC-Pursuit's parent org.) at 1-800-TELENET.

The idea of a "sample MAGIC! session" is appealing, if it is "canned."
I've done enough live computer demos around th World to know that
nothing will go as planned. We once even wired the hotel specifically
for the demo (they didn't have direct dial phone lines in the meeting
rooms), and everything was perfect until we went "live" and got busy
signals! I feel comfortable with the overhead projector, although I
have thought of using one of the projection systems.

By the way, can you tell me more about the color scanner you have?

Re: CUBBERS! YIPES!

Ok, just finnished a Blue and gold dinner (burp) Why is it when a
magician walks into a set up like this, he is confronted with "We had
a magician last year, I know all his tricks!" I am absolutly befuddled!
when I started MY act I explain everybody is diffrent (some more than
others) Then the show starts and apparently they did not know a thing!
My line up (as best as I could remember) open with dye tube routiene to
get them intrested. then to a cut rope (i beleive I am using the eric
lewis routien (it is the best) then to Clatterbox +BREAK+ walking thru
ropes (tarbell) and finally the abbots wrist chopper with a variation
o the patter Don Lawton (my hero) used.., by the end of the show the
kids were all a wonder (not stevie or tommy) as to "how" it all
happened! Needless to say that they were impressed and they want me to
teach their dens some simple tricks. I was thinking about Fire
eating!?!?!?

Re: CUBBERS! YIPES!

You're kidding, I hope! I teach drug and alcholol abusive teens and
the effects I found that worked the best were those they could carry
with them and used the simplest props. Try Crazy Man's Handcuffs,
Linking Paper Clips, Penetrating Matches and Professors Nightmare.
Remember "KISS" (Keep It Simple, Stupid!) and always ALWAYS reward
every effort, success or failure. Don't let one know-it-all kid take
the lead and overwhelm the smaller or slower kids. Every kid needs a
turn at glory. At the end of your training session, have a video handy
to show them. This has worked for me for 5 years now.

Re: EMERGENCY!!!

I know this will sound ridiculous, but I am worried. My two year old
daughter, Rebecca, ate a sponge ball. I am SERIOUS! She was playing
and got into my older daughter's magic kit and GULP! Down it went. I
called poison control immediately and they said they never heard of a
sponge ball (there was also a lot of giggles in the background - nice
to know my child could be slowly poisoned and all they can do is laugh)
and I described it to them (try describing a sponge ball). It is one
of the red ones and I need to know if the coloring has any toxins in
it. All they said was to watch her closely and take her to the ER
should she start acting strangely. Please don't laugh, I really AM
worried about my little girl. Is the red dye they use poisonous to
children? Answer back ASAP!

Re: CUBBERS! YIPES!

No Stacey, I am not kidding! The effects mentioned were the ones I
performed. And I did KISS the audience. One very famous magician of
days goneby used to say befor every performance, "I LOVE MY AUDIENCE"
and regardless how simple the method, the outcome is the part they will
remember.
Know-it-all kidsreally dont! they are just as amazed with the
Professors Nightmare NOT knowing how it is done rather ten the kid
finding out on his/her accord. linking clips are fun as a puzzle, but
why would you wanna teach Crazy Man's HC to a group of pre-teens? the
concept of the illusion is what the thinking magician has worked on to
refine and develop. When you state that every kid needs a turn at
glory, you are right. there are many elementary books avaible to teach
principle with method rather learning method alone. I have been doing
family entertainement since I was 12. It all started with a blue and
gold dinner when the actual "hired" magician called to cancel. Ever
since then, I have been doing family style shows. I may not be a big
requested name in magic, but this is my _FULL TIME_ occupation. (100%
of income) I'm never at the conventions because they hold them at very
popular weekends for partys and other events.........I seem to think
that when you go to a convention, look at all the out of work
magicians! I also do the clown gig too! Keeps me busy!

Yes to both questions -- I have invented stuff only to find out I had
been anticipated, sometimes in considerable detail, by anything from a
few months to several decades. There are also those people who plead
ignorance when confronted with such evidence -- here in situations
where they are marketing something and continue to market it on the
grounds that they came up with it independently. Inventing, however,
is not enough; you have to invent FIRST. Nothing wrong with missing a
credit; a LOT wrong with ignoring it.

Well. If you take a needle (FOR GOSH SAKES DON'T TELL NO KIDS

the skin at the corner of a fold (wrinkle) in your thumb knuckle

Now, get a sucker to watch and talk about PSYCHIC SURGERY OR
WHATEVER (Burton will advise here) bring out a seemingly sharp
pocket knife, or whatever. Now you start to saw back and forth
across the knuckle, a little blood comes out the pinhole and runs
across the wrinkle. Looks like you are cutting right across your

Re: ORIGINALITY

Frankly the tricks, props, etc. routines mean little, compared to
the LIKABILITY of the performer and the PRESENTATION... It would
be tuff (for me) to do any kind of critique from a written discrip-
tion. 90-percent of the time, when I view an audition tape, I
know in the first 30-90 seconds if I want the act. Look, attitude,
style (likability) are the key factors. Only once in awhile do
you get fooled and the act gets better or worse by leaps and
bounds and CHANGES my opinion.
.
Funny, same goes for people in the acting biz. I see a series and
right away I seem to be able to tell who will stick in, become
popular and successful and who will fade soooooooon... just a
knack of some kind I happen to have.

Wait a minute, Pete. Are you saying your VCR won't tape anything? Or
that it just won't tape Star Trek?

I know what you mean about the easy jobs. Right now, I can't find
much, hard or easy. Got one hard one perkin' out there, but not really
sure I want to do it - it is one of those that they try to sell to you
on the basis that it is a "challenge."

Re: SHOOTING STAR

Given the nature of Frank Thompson's Master Deck I would not be quick
to dismiss his eighty-hour claim.

Regarding your question, back in the 1970s I developed an elaborate
routine with the Endless Chain (not Pricking the Garter; there's a
difference, as I'm sure you know). It ran the better part of ten
minutes, with a hell of a lot of applause cues. I used it as a closer
during my very first run in the Close-Up Room at the Magic Castle.

Many of the individual elements of the routine were from published
sources (Rink, Blake, Lowe, etc.) along with technical ideas of my own
devising, but what made it all work was the structure.

Over the years I've had requests to publish the routine; perhaps some
day I shall, but at the moment there seems to be little reason to do
so.

Teach them the cut and restored forearm (using nicked axes) or the burn

Re: HELLO

Hi Stacey,
I've lived in Vegas now for a little more than five years with my
wife Kay, and our eight year old son Benjamin. I'd find it
difficult living anywhere else. Never again will I shovel snow,
or endure hot muggy Nebraska summers if I have my way about it.

Yes, I know both Steve and Mike.
Steve was one of the first magicians I met when I moved here. He
was working at the time at the Magic Mansion at Circus Circus. He
introduced me to the magic of Paul Harris' "Immaculate
Connection".

I met Mike shortlyafter David's "Death Saw" left him with a
severely damaged right hand. I even helped him shoot some Video
footage of a show he was in at Vegas World where I also got see
another good friend of mine as his assistant. She used to be the
lead dancer for Nevada Dance Theater until she retired last year.
She loves magic as well and jumped at the chance to participate
in a show with Michael. She got "Impaled" twice a night by Mike.
I haven't talked to him since he left for Chicago last year.

Luckily, (I guess) Mike's van burned up, if I remember correctly.
I recall shuttling him around town a few times when he couldn't
borrow someone elses car. He has a lot of friends here in Vegas.

Don't worry about my van, it's a Dodge Caravan and rides quite
nicely, and it does have seats. I just hope I can have the car
that day, although I hear you're not averse to wearing a helmet.
I may have to bring my Honda Silver Wing to DMS.

Looking forward to meeting you at DMS,
David (the other one)

Yes! I've seen both an Amiga software version and a stand alone
unit that utilizes up to three monitors. One for watching the
input, one for edited output, and the third is an editor screen.
I have a video by Todd Rungren made entirely with the Video
Toaster. I also viewed a demo made by our friends Penn and Teller
showing some of the more bizarre effects that can be created. I
just wish I can somehow justify buying one at work so I can play
with it. The last Summagraphics show had a special deal for the
standalone box for $1400. I was strongly tempted to go ahead and
buy it just for myself.

My wife had other ideas.

Oh well,

I, unfortunately, do not have the '92 DMS program of events. I
worked it out on horseback while riding with Joe in northern New
Mexico last August without making notes. Joe made the notes later. I
didn't make a copy. I believe Steve captured most of it, with the
exception of the Thursday events which will include a meeting of all
contestants, the informal close up bull session, the welcome party
(arabian nights theme) and the first comedy challenge show at 8:30 pm
I think you also need to add the MAGIC! session at 5 pm on Friday.
I do have notes on the tentative program for the 93 DMS but those are
still classified.

Regarding Frank Thompson -
I'm glad that you at least saw Frank, as he is unknown to a great
many in magic. Frank used to show up unannounced at my door in the
early evening. He was extremely well versed in not only most areas
of magic, but many other subjects as well. If he wasn't well read
on some subject, he usually knew enough to con you in thinking that
he was. Frank was one of the great characters of magic...for that
matter he would have been a character in almost any field. At any
rate, he would start doing magic...complete with cigar and a unique
presentation style that had just enough con in it that you could
never be quite sure the first time he showed you a routine. Many of
his routine incorporated an element of con anyhow. His "patter" (I
hesitte to call it that) was often punctuated with a "hey" or a
sort of "ey" with a Boston accent. The expression was all his, but
it served to not only misdirect, but to also draw you in as he often
uttered it when he was supposedly showing you the "work" on something
while, in fact, he was pulling you headfirst down the garden path.
I remember one evening in particularly, when the hours passed, the
apartment filled with cigar smoke, and the early light of dawn began
to show through the window and still Frank went on. It was a night
of 42 or 80 hours (you name it) of the Master Deck, all the Okito
box work, the O'Henry Aces, and so forth. The amazing things is that
most of it was great material. It was exceedingly difficult to
reconstruct after a session with Frank, particularly if you only saw
something for the first time. I am not even sure Frank could re-
construct some of the stuff. He used to scribble notes on the backs
of envelopes or whatever paper was available. It is a shame that so
little of his material even got into print. He is one of my great
memories in magic, and I miss him.

The high cost of rent has pretty much negated the existance of the
back room in most shops. Or at least, a back room for the "boys" to
gather in (that is not a sexist statement...there were never any
"girls" in the back rooms I was in) as the space is used for stock
or mailing room type stuff. Al used to have a back room when he was
on Pennsyvania Avenue many years ago. Phil Thomas had a "side" room
that kinda served as a back room. He also had upstairs rooms. Of
course, there was Flosso's back room which was the most amazing of
them all...piles and piles of magical treasures. It was the only
place I went whenever I was lucky enough to be in New York.

Re: SHOOTING STAR

Yes, it is too bad that I never found Flosso's. But at that age I was
having a lot of trouble navigating the NY subway system. It wasn't
easy to read the signs when you were only three feet tall and
surrounded by shoving people. I do remember a treat, rather local, I
think, to New York, that was called a Charlotte Russe, although I may
not have the name exactly right - a little paper ring that held a small
cake topped with about a foot of whipped cream (REAL whipped cream),
surmounted by a maraschino cherry. At that time, in Florida, there
were still drug stores that sold "phosphates."

But I do wonder what I could have done if I had found Flosso's. Nathan
has been luckier in that regard - already having some of the World's
best magi as friends and at least he can go to the Castle on Sundays.

Here is the true and correct virgin of the song!
.
On top of spaghetti, all coverd with cheese,
I lost my poor meat ball when sombody sneezed.
It rolled off the table and on to the floor,
and then my poor meat ball rolled out of the door.
It rolled down the sidewalk and under a bush,
and then my poor meat ball was nothing but muush.

Re: CLASSIC RENDITIONS

I've just had a chance to look at Michael Ammar's CLASSIC RENDITIONS
#2 (the newly released "midquel" between Volumes #1 and #3 that were
released previously).

It is superb! This series is the ultimate state-of-the-art in
teaching magic through video. It is _the_ proof of how effective
good video can be in teaching technical skills. Michael has coupled
truly professional video techniques - superb duplication, hi-fi
sound, etc. - with what he terms "Super Practice Sessions." These
sessions are built around the latest learning theory techniques,
combining neuro-muscular programming with a well-documented approach
known as "super learning." The result is astonishing!

Classic Renditions #2 includes four effects - The Crazyman's
Handcuffs, Dan Harlan's Traveling Cash, The Broken and Restored
Rubber Band, and John Cornelius teaching The Vanishing Nickel. The
history of each effect is carefully documented and each includes
Michael's unique modifications. In addition to the technical
training, the video is loaded with performance hints and performance
philosophy. This is, quite simply, a blockbuster video; equal to,
and perhaps even surpassing, the opportunity to learn from a master
in a live session.

Classic Renditions #2 joins the other released volumes in this
series, #1 - The Floating Bill and John Cornelius' Coin That Falls
Up and #3 - The Invisible Bill Switch and John Cornelius' Borrowed
Bill Routine. I believe that each sells for around $35.

I don't know if Michael will accept orders via private message here
on MAGIC!, but you can certainly ask him (or you can get them from
your local magic dealer, mail order magic dealers or from L&L
Publishing [800-626-6572]). If you want to see how good video can
really be, you have to see one of these tapes.

The last time I saw it, it rolled out the door
A truck came and squashed it, it died the next day

Batmobile lost a wheel and Joker got away...

Re: FOLLOW THE BOUNCING BALL

I am happy to report Rebecca has survived the sponge ball incident,
although she was a little sleepier than usual today. She is her happy,
bouncy (pardon the pun) self. The props have been locked up AGAIN, but
Rebecca's nickname is Houdini. She can get INTO and OUT OF anything
you put in front of her. Or DON'T put in front of her. She is an
escape artist and makes the Energizer Bunny look lethargic. I did NOT
leave the sponge ball lying around. It was on the top shelf of the
closet in a locked box. Her older sister got it out and gave it to her
in retaliation for Rebecca throwing Funky Munky in the cat box. I
don't think Holly meant for Rebecca to eat it, just play with it.
Holly was practicing with mouth coils and I think Rebecca got it in her
head that sponge balls looked particularly appetizing. Personally, I
would like to try the Death Saw on both of them...except they're so
darn cute!

David,

By all means try to locate any Tom Glazer albums you
can for Nathan. One is actually called On Top of
Spaghetti (Glazer wrote that song, by the way). He's a
marveous children's entertainer. The album also
features Puff(the magic dragon), From the Halls of
Montezuma (to the shores of P.T.A.), When the Dust Mops
Go Rolling Along, Dunderbeck, Battle Hymn of the
Children, etc. Really fun songs. (As a teenager I also
used to listen faithfully to WLS Chicago. The DJ Dick
Biondi used to sing the spaghetti song all the time.
So I really enjoyed re-discovering it for my kids.)

So you think conventions are for unemployed magicians to hang out, do
you? Well WHAT A CROCK!!! I go to conventions to learn new things, to
meet my friends and to find things that I can use to keep my act fresh
and interesting. If I had never been to a convention, I wouldn't get
to meet people like Eugene Burger, Michael Ammar, Stan Allen, Bill
Smith, Max Maven and Terry Seabrooke. Maybe YOU like sitting in a
corner vegetating, but some of us actually LEARN something at
conventions. I am also a professional travel agent and attend travel
conventions. And guess what - I'M EMPLOYED! Because of a combination
of these two, the Magicians Travel Network was created. I hoep others
feel as I do. I use every opportunity I can to learn new things.

In Florida we had Royal Castle and Krystal - both had the same size

Re: CONVENTIONS

I'm Employed too! (self) also, being from LA I have managed to see and
experience the Magi you have listed. You see, magic and entertainment
are a full time job for me, and why dont the convention planners plan
to hold their confrences on week-days? If they did, then more of the
FULL TIME WORKING MAGICIANS would be able to attend. Like a great Genii
columnist once stated in his submissions, There are 20 people who think
in magic. (ok so the quote is wrong but you get the picture. These 20
are also the Working the conventions, while I am working the private
engagements. Conventions (magic) are ok for the hobbiest (like
yourself) and for the dealers and book sellers to show off their works
and for seminars and teach ins. Yes you do LEARN at the conventions,
but how many PAID PERFORMANCES do you do a year? As a travel agent,
you must keep up on all the latest lines of travel. and using magic as
your hobby, of course you would use the advantage of helping a
traveling magician soar to new location. I do not sit in a corner
vegitating! Which reminds me of a joke. These two carrots were in a car
accident, one was injured and promptly taken to the hospital. the
surviving carrot asks the doctor, "will my friend be ok?" the doctor
replies, "yes, but he will be a vegtable the rest of his life!"
So, dearest Stacey, while the convention is ment for education, how
many of the attendees are FULL TIME PRO rather than full time something
else and part time magician? (sr. Biro is the exception to the last
statement) Fortunatly, I am a single (no immeadite family or
dependents) so I can live in a manner that I enjoy with out meeting
significant others expectations.

Re: FOLLOW THE BOUNCING BALL

I know "kids" who swallow 6 hits or more every time they go to a
Grateful Dead concert. These kids are OUR AGE (30+) and younger. I do
not use chemicals as a recreational stimulant, and I do not endorse
their use. But I did know a girl (20+) who used to take spray paint and
spray a sock and inhale the fumes! How bout the USC basket ball star
who did some "cocaine" and suffered a heart attack and died? How bout
all those magicians who died from the bottle? (booze). If you can
change a childs mind to positive thinking, there you have won the
battle. I am VERY careful not to do ANYTHING that might influence a
child to try at home. "KIDS, DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME. GO TO YOUR
NEIGHBORS HOUSE ANT TRY
NEIGHBORS HOUSE AND TRY IT!" Kids need to be kids, but look Stacey, we
live in a time where it is OK for cartoon charactors die violently
(NINJA TURTLES etc..) and parents need to take more responsibility
towards the bringing up of the next generation (shudder)!
Why was FUNKEY MONKEY thrown into the cat box. TREAT YOUR TOYS WITH
RESPECT! when I was a meer spot of a lad, I had this tapestry called
"If a child...." it is tru insperation. I wish I could find it again!
and remember, LIFE IS A BANQUET AND MOST POOR SOBS ARE STARVING TO
DEATH!
When teaching magic to the younger set, the premise is no I can do this
and your a jerk but rather, I can do this and share some happiness with
you for a while.

Re: CONVENTIONS

Simple - Weekdays it is hard for the part-timers/amateurs to get away
from their other jobs.

Consider my own case for example:

Mondays - Can't go to conventions, too busy recovering from the
weekend, doing hair and nails, etc.
Tues. - Actually try to work for a living.
Wed. - More of the same.
Thurs. - Grocery shopping, dusting and cleaning, stuff like that.
Fri. - Lunch at Castle when possible; otherwise, laundry day,
             change sheets, make beds.

See - weekdays is work, work, work for the non-fulltimers.

Better yet, do what I do - disconnect all the external stuff, the

stuff like that. Watch good films - Dangerous Liaisons, Gone With The

television are Leave It To Beaver (2 episodes shown locally between 9
and 10 every morning) and sometimes Bonanza, only because it follows
Beaver.

Get a raincoat and we can enter three abreast (with Nathan under the

What happens when marketing an effect, you truly thought was original
and then finding out that it was in print years ago. If you change
the literature to show the true creator does that make it OK ?
.
I would assume that if the true creator were still alive then the
person marketing the effect could get permission from the creator.
What happens if the creator is deceased ?

Question - If the wife wouldn't shake hands with you for weeks after

Also, I agree with your statement about leaving it where the pooch

yet) then it is our fault for leaving it there or for not telling him

Thanks for the suggestions. Actually, they parallel my own. But I'd
like to find some way to win Joe's approval. I don't want to have a
foul up with him as I respect him too much and there is a good synergy

Other part is that he really has been invited to work in the show (Biro
doesn't know this) and I think that could legitimize his being there.
I'm going to try to work on it - he left me a note tonite that said,
"Please, let's go to Las Vegas soon!" I really don't want him let

Re: WHERE WOULD WE BE

The honorable thing is to check with the creator of the effect and go
along with his or her wishes. If they are deceased it gets a bit
cloudier -- I mean, if you are making major bucks with this thing and
the person has a surviving family, there should be some consideration
there. At the very least, if it is an item in a book, the credit line
should be corrected.

Re: WHERE WOULD WE BE

It is not easy. But most marketers should have knowledge or access
to the knowledge... the books and tricks are there... and there
are people that know much of what has gone by.
.
But things will slip on by. I could site a number of items if I
were to sit down and think about them...
.
The things that fried me were related to such items as Svengali
Decks, Zombie Balls, etc. where the creators were known and yet
any dealer that wanted to sell them just ran out and had them
made. No royalties, no nuttin...
.
In my personal case knowledge, Ken Brooke used to make deals with
his magic creators and paid them quite well, and even worked out
the quantity that would be done... and when others ripped him off
it blew many things... like the philosophy Ken had that only a few
of a certain item should exist... and he would not sell the same
trick (in some cases where a special item was to be exclusive) to
someone in the same geographical area as a previous buyer.
